My main impression of Lana Del Rey is that she has the stage presence of a lost girl. Video Games is a lovely song, but its lovelier without her warbled, faux jazz vocals. The amalgam of The Smiths "This Charming Man" with "Video Games" is good actually and made me appreciate the composition (sampling) on that song. The singles "Born to Die" and "Blue Jeans" especially, have great production, it sort of reminds me of HURTS music. That song's layered texture was aurally promising, but Del Rey's vocals were lackluster. She sings better than on SNL, but such stretches are relegated to the studio setting. I recall one live performance when she switched from the deep, throaty vibrato to this little girl purr in like one second, which was unnerving for me, to say the least. She's so-so for me.
