She slowly opened her eyes, but could not see anything. She had trouble remembering what had happened. Darkness engulfed her. She was wet, sticky, and cold. She pushed through a thick-like fluid that surrounded her. She reached hardness, a wall. She desperately patted along the wall and realized she was completely encased inside. Suddenly, she felt it becoming hard to breathe and her heart began to race in her chest. She heard its rhythm echoing loud in her ears. In a sudden panic, with all her strength she pushed forward. With a rush and a crumbling crash, the wall fell away and she tumbled to the ground. She lay there on the ground, shivering wet in the late evening wind. She gazed up at the sky and saw the first few stars beginning to twinkle and the moon peeking down at her.

Around her were tall trees, bushes, and many rocks and stones. She could hear the low rumbling of a river nearby. She looked down at her brand new self. She let out a surprised gasp. Her body was completely different! She had two long legs and two dainty feet. She moved them slowly back and forth. She raised her arms and looked at them and then at her hands. She held her hands in front of her face and wiggled her long fingers fast. She giggled to herself, thinking of all the new things she could do now. She looked around, found some large leaves, and reached for them. She winced and realized how painful and weak she really was, but was determined to continue her task. She had been through so much already, but was not going to give up now. She knew this was a good change, and she must continue and be strong.

While cleaning her new body off and removing the sticky substance, she heard rustling in the trees and bushes. She jumped and her green eyes darted around the wooded area. She quickly tried to stand to defend herself, but stumbled and fell back hard onto the forest floor. Slowly, faces peeked from behind the trees, bushes, and stones around her. Caught off guard, she inhaled loudly and held her breath, her green eyes wide and startled. Looking closer, she recognized some faces, while others were vaguely familiar. As they slowly began venturing out and she was able to see each one, she realized she knew these creatures. She felt a sense of calmness, and her heart no longer felt as though it was going to burst out of her chest. She exhaled slowly, and smiled shyly towards them.

Again, she attempted to stand. As she started to rise, she felt a heavy weight on her back, and reached her hands around. Reaching her hands around to her back, her hands touched something large, wet, velvety and cloth-like. Confused, she grabbed and pulled hard. She let out a shrill, banshee-like scream that echoed through the woods as a searing pain ripped over her back and throughout her body. The concerned creatures eagerly raced over to her. She felt their kindness, compassion, and love as they comforted her. The pain began to ease and now was a dull throbbing ache. Curiously, she carefully turned her head to see what was on her back. She gasped in awe to discover glistening purple and black wings upon her back. They were HER beautiful wings. Her eyes widened, grinned big, and looked around at the others. Each of them smiled back at her. They were genuinely happy for her. They were her friends, her true friends.

One very tall dark-haired man and a beautiful petite woman stepped forward. Standing on her tiptoes, the woman kindly wrapped a warm thick blanket around her. He reached out and offered her a large fruit. She took the sweet-smelling fruit, pulled the blanket closer to her, and looked at them both with great thanks in her eyes. She knew these two very well because the strong feelings now swirling through her and the quick flashes of them in her mind. Her memory was coming back slowly, but it was coming back. They helped her onto her feet and over to a large long petrified log. She sat on the log and ate the delicious fruit with the warm blanket wrapped around her. The others sat in a circle and chatted while she listened. She felt happy and at home with them.

After what seemed like a couple of hours had passed, she stood and carefully removed the blanket. Out fluttered huge full beautiful shiny black and dark purple wings. Her wings stretched wide and looked gorgeous against her soft, long, curly, copper hair and ivory, freckled flesh. She stood strong and tall and her friends stared up at her, feeling so proud of her. They were proud of who she had become, despite the hardships she had faced and overcame. They were proud she had discovered her true strength and courage just when she needed them the most.

Standing tall, she felt the night wind softly caress over her body and wisp through her hair playfully. She heard the night calling to her. She lowered her eyes and lovingly gazed at the handsome, tall, dark-haired man and the lovely woman with beautiful caring eyes. As if reading her mind, they nodded slowly, but commented to return soon. She nodded, smiled at them, and turned to do the same at the others. They all smiled back at her, which made her feel loved, happy, and peaceful.

She slowly stepped forward, feeling a bit awkward at first. She stepped into the clearing. She fluttered her new wings, feeling their immense strength. She felt empowered. She felt new. Looking up at the dark night sky, with the stars twinkling down at her, and the moon calling to her, she began to fly up. Her wings took her further up and she started to soar through the night sky, and she felt complete, strong, safe, and proud. No longer did she feel lost, empty, or trapped. She realized she was always where she had belonged, where she was always loved and cherished, and where her true friends were the entire time. Despite how difficult and painful, she now knew all the recent hardships she had faced, the complicated choices she had made, and the changes she had gone through were well worth it. Smiling as her strong wings took her higher into the night sky, she felt ready for her new life to begin.
