Blue Balloons and Motorcycles

Today I attended the funeral of a dear friend's nine year old son. To say it was sad would be a gross understatement. It's soul crushing to walk in and see a child in a casket, and to see the grief of his mom and dad. One might think I'd leave there feeling wretched. Well I wasn't in a festive mood to be sure, but there were some sweet, more light hearted touches that helped.
First of all, was my friend's four year old daughter. She is a darling, just being a typical little girl, getting so excited about the balloons that she lost at least two before someone tied one to her wrist.
I'm leaving out something important: Why we had balloons in the first place.
After the service, we all went out to the church lobby to let the family say their final goodbyes alone. We were all given blue or green balloons,(Korbyn's favorite colors I think.) and we went outside and released them in Korbyn's honor. How freeing that was! They also had a motorcycle there because Korbyn loved them. The motorcyclist made all sorts of racket on the bike, just for Korbyn's memory. I thought it was really a cool thing to do.
I learned it doesn't have to be anything lavish to bring people comfort. Sometimes all you need is a little girl who can't hold on to her balloons. Or Blue balloons and motorcycles. RIP Korbyn!
