First Blog Post! Second Performance of Parade

Today I had my second performance as Britt Craig in the musical Parade (music and lyrics by Jason Robert Brown [13, The Last 5 Years] and book by Albert Uhry [Driving Miss Daisy]) and I thought I did really, really poorly. Last night was opening night and it was incredible, the audience loved the show, and the response was great. People were crying at the right times, laughing at the right times, it was perfect. Then tonight I just felt...off. I knew I wasn't giving it my all and I just kept trying to do better. My character is supposed to be drunk during his first song, and after a less than stunning performance of Act 1, the director comes backstage and gives a whole schpeel about how awful the first half of Act 1 was, and how if he hadn't been in the middle of a row he would have walked out of the theatre because it was so bad. Both of my songs are in the first half of Act 1. He told me I was being too drunk. Is there even such a thing as too drunk?! I'm sorry I'm giving it my all out there, while other people are laughing and talking out of character on stage! Geeze. Thanks for confirming my idea that I did horribly, even though I got many compliments from the cast and audience. Not a happy day. If I could, I would cry.
The director was talking about how we need to be "perfect." Why aren't we "perfect yet." Well maybe if you would actually critique my performance rather than telling me I need new shoes I would be perfect.
