The Ghost In The Machine?

I was recently reading up on a few philosophy concepts such as works by Gilbert Ryle, Rene Descartes among others including 'The Turing Test' , and it got me thinking...

First i just want to state the concept of my title Ghost (Souls, Mind etc.. or the undercernable 'thing' that gives us our personalities, our thought processes which is also for the most part unexplainable in its entirity to us as of yet) and the machine (our material physical bodies).

some physicalists and/or behaviouralists and functionalists believe that our bodies only react to the input data from the outside world and just output a reaction in accordance to our own survival etc..

If this concept is true then we are basically nothing but a computer, a somewhat highly advanced computer but a computer nontheless just running with our highly advanced script and just outputing and action or thought in accordance to whatever the input is......

this concept scares and saddens me a bit because if this is the case then there is nothing outside the box there is nothing special about us and we are just mindless programs who think we are more then that.....

but this is just a hypothetical theory... one that will, in my time probably never be proven for or otherwise so eh..

but anyway thats my thoughts for the day

One could refer to your 'ghost' as the human consciousness.
I think that's special enough about us if you compare us to what we think we know about most other species.
I don't think I've ever seen a giraffe doing yoga and coming to terms with an otherwise restless mind/body.
