-----When we are overloaded by our dominant function, or feel it has failed us, our unconscious protects us by allowing us to temporarily turn off our dominant function (or really turn way down, I suppose), which leaves us with the function in the opposite orientation. It does not make us more ept to handle the stress--it just shields us while the stress is present. If the stress was related to or caused by the dominant function, then it is necessary for the inferior to "take over" for a while and let the overheated dominant function cool down or repair.
-----The inferior function opposes the dominant and in many ways has its own agenda. It can be helpful to think of the dominant and inferior as representing opposite ends of a rubber band. As the dominant moves toward greater consciousness and is pulled tighter, the inferior shows a commensurate increase in tension as it is pushed/stretched away from consciousness. As this dominant-inferior tension increases, we are more likely to snap, displaying any number of irrational, childish, or self-indulgent behaviors.
